The effective range of a two-way radio is dependent on several variables
1 Antenna: Make sure your antenna screwed on well to the antenna connector of the radio. (Damaged or improperly attached antennas can reduce your coverage dramatically)

2 Batteries: Use fresh batteries and to make sure that your batteries are fully charged
3 Surrounding terrain: Inside a building or even just a room with really thick concrete and steel walls will greatly reduce transmission signal. So,step outside or get near a wall opening or a window, transmitting from the highest point of a natural or manmade structure can noticeably increase the range of your handheld radio
4 Frequency: Which Is Better, VHF or UHF? VHF travel greater distances, but less suitable for highly obstructed areas. UHF with higher penetration, and much more effectively than VHF. Generally, UHF is the more popular band to use because it is a better all around signal, unless you need to transmit outdoors across great distances.
most BFDX two way radios both covered VHF and UHF frequency. you can choose your suitable frequency freely
